How to play Queens: rules, method and tips to win

The rules of Queens in brief
Queens is a logic puzzle played on a square grid split into colored regions. Your goal fits in one sentence: place one queen, and only one, in each row, in each column and in each colored region. A final constraint gives the game all its flavor. Two queens can never touch, not even at a corner. In other words, around every queen you place, the eight neighboring cells become forbidden.
So there is no luck and no gambling. Every grid has a single solution, and that solution is reached purely by deduction. You never guess: you eliminate, you force, you repeat. Our version is free and unlimited, with grids running from 6x6 to 9x9. The principle stays the same at every size, only the number of deductions grows as the grid gets bigger.
How a game unfolds
Start by observing, not by placing
Before placing anything, take the time to read the grid. The smallest regions, the ones covering only two or three cells, are your best allies: they leave few choices and often deliver the very first forced move. Spot them, they are what will kick off the game.
Place a queen, then eliminate everything it forbids
As soon as you place a queen, immediately mark everything it makes impossible: its whole row, its whole column, the rest of its region and its eight neighbors, diagonals included. This marking is not a chore, it is the engine of the game. Every cell you cross out brings another cell closer to becoming obvious.
Chain the deductions
A game of Queens is not a series of independent moves, it is a chain reaction. A placed queen shrinks other units down to a single possibility, which in turn become forced queens, which trigger new eliminations. You advance step by step until the grid fills in on its own. Three techniques are enough to run that chain from start to finish.
Technique 1: the single candidate
This is the base technique, the one that alone solves most easy and intermediate grids. The principle is crystal clear: a row, a column or a colored region must contain exactly one queen. If one of these units has only one open cell left, then the queen is necessarily there. Logic forces the move, there is nothing to decide.
Get into the habit of scanning all three unit types after each move: rows first, then columns, then regions. You can also work by counting: count the open cells left in each row, each column and each region, and as soon as that count drops to one, you have a queen. This counting reflex keeps you from missing a forced move when the grid is already well filled and the open cells are scattered.
Technique 2: region confinement
When no cell is directly forced anymore, move to confinement. Look at the still-open cells of a colored region. If they all sit on the same row, then that region's queen must be on that row. But each row carries only one queen. So no other region can place its own there: in one stroke you eliminate all the other open cells of that row, the ones belonging to other colors.
The reasoning is perfectly symmetric for columns: a region whose open cells all share a single column locks that column for the others. Confinement does not place a queen directly, it crosses cells out. But those eliminations almost always make a single candidate reappear elsewhere, and the chain restarts. It is the technique that unlocks grids labeled Tough or Expert, the ones where the single candidate alone eventually goes in circles.
Technique 3: the one-move test
On the hardest grids, it happens that neither the single candidate nor confinement makes progress. Bring out the one-move test then, also called reasoning by contradiction. Pick an open cell and imagine placing a queen there. Immediately apply its direct consequences: its row, its column, its region and its neighbors are eliminated. Then ask a simple question: does this move leave any region, row or column with no possible cell at all?
If the answer is yes, it is a contradiction. That cell therefore cannot hold a queen, and you cross it out for good. Notice that you placed no real queen: you only tested a hypothesis and observed that it led to a dead end. Applied to the right candidates, this test restarts the single candidate and confinement. And that is all: there is no secret method in Queens beyond these three. Guides that promise exotic chains are only describing extended versions of the one-move test.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting the diagonals
The number one mistake is to cross out a queen's row and column but forget its four corners. Yet those diagonal eliminations are precisely what create the next single candidate. After each queen, systematically think of the eight neighbors, with no exception.
Guessing instead of deducing
Placing a queen on a hunch breaks the logic and leads you straight to a contradiction a few moves later, often without you understanding where the error came from. If nothing is forced, do not gamble: look for confinement first, then the one-move test. The solution is always reachable without guessing.
Not annotating the grid
Keeping every elimination in your head is exhausting and error-prone. Mark the forbidden cells as you go. A well-annotated grid works for you: the next forced move ends up jumping out on its own.

Start small. Stay on 6x6 and 7x7 until the single candidate becomes pure reflex, then gradually climb in size and difficulty. Add confinement as you tackle tough grids, keep the one-move test for the most expert ones. Speed, for its part, never comes from rushing. Fast players do not guess, they instantly recognize which technique applies and where.
