What is Queens?
Queens, also known as queen sudoku or a queens puzzle, is a thinking game popularized by LinkedIn, which launched it in 2024 in its games tab. The idea revisits an old chess riddle, the queens problem, and blends it with the Star Battle puzzle from logic magazines: on a grid split into colored regions, you place one queen in every row, every column and every region, with none able to attack another by direct contact.

The rules in four points
All of Queens fits in four constraints. Together, they leave only one possible arrangement of the queens.
1. One queen per row
Each horizontal row of the grid holds exactly one queen, no more, no less. On an 8x8 grid you therefore place eight queens in total, one per row.
2. One queen per column
In the same way, each vertical column can contain only one queen. No two queens ever share a column.
3. One queen per colored region
The grid is divided into colored regions, as many as there are rows. Each color must host one queen and only one. This constraint, absent from chess, is what gives Queens its flavor.
4. No queen touches another
Two queens can never sit on adjacent cells, including diagonally. Around each queen, the eight neighboring cells are forbidden. This contact rule replaces the sweeping moves of chess queens.
