Why play Zip with two players
Zip is already gripping solo, but the 2 player mode gives it a new intensity. Solo, you play against the clock and against yourself. With two players, you play against someone tackling the exact same grid, at the same moment. Every second counts, every hesitation costs you, and the smallest tracing mistake can swing the round. It is the same pure deduction, but with the tension of a live match.
Playing Zip with friends is also a simple social ritual. A grid solves in a minute or two, so a full duel stays short and slots into a break. You can fire up a rematch right away, compare your times, and turn a calm logic game into a friendly little contest. Multiplayer adds a dimension solo will never replace: the joy of beating someone you know, on strictly equal ground.
Finally, versus play reveals ways of playing you would not explore alone. Under pressure, you look for the most direct route rather than the safest one, you learn to read a grid at a glance, and you take calculated risks. These are exactly the reflexes that make you better at Zip, and multiplayer is the best way to train them.
Playable anywhere, in real time
Zip multiplayer runs entirely in the browser, in real time. As soon as your friend joins the lobby, you are linked to the same game: the round starts for both at once, each on your own device. Nothing to download, nothing to install, no extension: a web page is enough, on desktop, tablet or phone. You can start a duel from your couch and take on a friend across the country on the same grid.
This lightness changes the way you play with friends. A full duel over five rounds wraps up in a few minutes, so you can slip a game into a lunch break, a queue or an evening. Since grids are generated on the fly, every game differs from the last, and a rematch instantly kicks off a fresh set of brand new rounds, never replaying the same path twice.
The shared mode keeps both players in sync from start to finish. You watch your own clock run while you solve, then both players' scores appear at the end of each round to show the gap. No third party app or separate software needed: everything is built into the page, from the invite room to the final screen that names the winner of the duel.
Challenge a friend in 3 steps
The simplest way to play Zip with two players is the private room by link. It needs no account, for you or your friend. You create a game, share a link, and play. Here is exactly how it goes.
Create a private room
Click Private Game above. A Zip room is created instantly, with no account and nothing to install. You land straight in the lobby as the host.
Share the invite link
Copy the room link and send it to your friend by message, chat or email. Anyone who opens it joins your room directly, no sign-up required on either side.
Start the 5 round race
Once your friend is in the lobby, launch the game. You both get the exact same Zip grid each round and race to trace the fastest path.
Face a random opponent
No one on hand for a duel? Random matchmaking connects you with another player looking for a game at the same moment. Unlike the private room, this mode needs a free account: it is what lets us pair you with an opponent and track the result of the match. If you are not signed in when you pick this mode, you are first sent to the sign-up page, then the search begins.
Once an opponent is found, you automatically join the lobby and the game starts like a private duel: same rules, same 5 round race, same grids for both. The only difference is that you do not know the person across from you. It is ideal for playing Zip online when your friends are away, and for testing yourself against players from elsewhere.
The 5 round race
A Zip duel is not played on a single grid, but over a 5 round race. Each round, the same grid is dealt to both players: you face precisely the same puzzle as your opponent, with no luck of the draw. Each of you plays on your own side, at your own pace, without watching the other trace live.
At the end of each round, both scores are compared and shown side by side, then added to your total. The game moves on round by round, each grid adding its points to the running total. After the fifth round, the totals are compared one last time: the player with the highest total wins the duel. Since everything plays out over five grids, a botched round is never fatal, you can always close the gap on the ones that follow.
How the score is calculated
Each round score rewards speed and a clean path. You start at 5000 points, and three penalties eat into that total as the round goes on.
Time: minus 20 points per second elapsed. It is the heaviest penalty over time, so solving fast makes all the difference.
Cancel: minus 15 points per cancelled cell. Every time you backtrack on your path, the erased cells are counted.
Hint: minus 100 points per hint used. A hint shows the next move, but it is expensive, best kept for when you are truly stuck.
The main penalties are therefore: 5000 minus 20 times the time in seconds, minus 15 times the number of cancellations, minus 100 times the number of hints, and minus 50 each time you reset the path. The score never drops below zero. In short, to maximise your points, trace fast, avoid backtracking, and only use a hint as a last resort.
Tips to win your duels
Because the grids are identical for both players, winning comes down to method, not luck. Before you trace, take a second to spot number 1 and the last number: those are your fixed start and finish. Picturing the path in your head before touching the grid avoids back and forth, and therefore cancellation penalties.
Trace in one continuous motion rather than in hesitant little pieces: every cancelled cell costs 15 points, and those backtracks add up fast. Keep in mind that time is the biggest penalty, so a correct path laid down quickly beats a perfect path found in thirty seconds. Finally, save hints for real dead ends: at 100 points each, one can wipe out the lead you built over several seconds of play. After each duel, start a rematch to apply what you just learned.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play Zip multiplayer with a friend?
Click Private Game to create a Zip room, then share the invite link with your friend. When they open the link they join your room, and you race across 5 rounds on the same grids. No account is needed for private link play.
Do I need an account to play Zip with friends?
No. The private link mode needs no account for either player: create the room, share the link, and start playing. An account is only required for random matchmaking against an unknown opponent.
How does the 5 round race work?
A Zip duel runs over 5 rounds. Each round you and your opponent get the exact same grid and solve it separately. Your round scores are compared, then added up. After 5 rounds the highest total wins.
How is my Zip multiplayer score calculated?
Each round starts at 5000 points. You lose 20 points per second, 15 points per cancelled move, and 100 points per hint used. The faster and cleaner your path, the higher your round score.
Can I play random opponents at Zip online?
Yes. Pick Random Matchmaking to face a player from anywhere. This mode requires a free account so results can be tracked. If you are not signed in, you are sent to the sign-up page first.
