Why play Pinpoint with two players
Pinpoint is a game of instinct: five clues point to the same hidden category, revealed from the most obscure to the most obvious. Solo, you take your time weighing each lead. With two players, that same puzzle becomes a race, because your opponent reads the exact same clues at the same moment. Pressure changes everything: you dare to commit earlier, on one clue fewer, because every extra clue you see melts your score away.
Playing Pinpoint with friends is also a short, social ritual. A puzzle solves in a few seconds, so a full duel stays quick and slots into a break. You can fire up a rematch right away, compare your scores, and turn a calm guessing game into a friendly little contest, on clues that are strictly identical for both.
Finally, versus play sharpens your risk taking. Against the clock, you learn to recognize the moment a single clue is already enough, to trust your first instinct, and not to wait for the obvious clue that would cost you a thousand points. These are exactly the reflexes that make you better at Pinpoint, and multiplayer is the best way to train them.
Playable anywhere, in real time
Pinpoint multiplayer runs entirely in the browser, in real time. As soon as your friend joins the lobby, you are linked to the same game: the round starts for both at once, each on your own device. Nothing to download, nothing to install, no extension: a web page is enough, on desktop, tablet or phone. You can start a duel from your couch and take on a friend across the country on the same puzzle.
This lightness changes the way you play with friends. A full duel over five rounds wraps up in a few minutes, so you can slip a game into a lunch break, a queue or an evening. Puzzles are drawn from a hand written bank, so every game differs from the last, and a rematch instantly kicks off a fresh set of brand new rounds.
The shared mode keeps both players in sync from start to finish. You watch your own clock run and your projected score drop with each clue revealed, then both players' scores appear at the end of each round to show the gap. No third party app or separate software needed: everything is built into the page, from the invite room to the final screen that names the winner of the duel.
Challenge a friend in 3 steps
The simplest way to play Pinpoint with two players is the private room by link. It needs no account, for you or your friend. You create a game, share a link, and play. Here is exactly how it goes.
Create a private room
Click Private Game above. A Pinpoint room is created instantly, with no account and nothing to install. You land straight in the lobby as the host.
Share the invite link
Copy the room link and send it to your friend by message, chat or email. Anyone who opens it joins your room directly, no sign-up required on either side.
Start the 5 round race
Once your friend is in the lobby, launch the game. Each round you both get the exact same Pinpoint puzzle and race to name the hidden category from as few clues as possible.
Face a random opponent
No one on hand for a duel? Random matchmaking connects you with another player looking for a game at the same moment. Unlike the private room, this mode needs a free account: it is what lets us pair you with an opponent and track the result of the match. If you are not signed in when you pick this mode, you are first sent to the sign-up page, then the search begins.
Once an opponent is found, you automatically join the lobby and the game starts like a private duel: same rules, same 5 round race, same puzzles for both. The only difference is that you do not know the person across from you. It is ideal for playing Pinpoint online when your friends are away, and for testing yourself against players from elsewhere.
The 5 round race
A Pinpoint duel is not played on a single puzzle, but over a 5 round race. Each round, the same puzzle is dealt to both players: you face precisely the same set of clues as your opponent, with no luck of the draw. Puzzles are drawn from the bank in the host language, the player who created the room, so both players read the exact same clues. Each of you plays on your own side, at your own pace, without seeing the other guesses live.
Each round starts with a first clue already visible. You can try an answer at any time: if it is right, the round is won; if it is wrong, the next clue is revealed and your score ceiling drops a notch. There is no button to reveal a clue yourself in multiplayer: clues only unlock on a wrong answer, which keeps everyone on equal footing. At the end of each round, both scores are compared and added to your total. After the fifth round, the player with the highest total wins the duel. Since everything plays out over five puzzles, a botched round is never fatal, you can always close the gap on the ones that follow.
How the score is calculated
Each round score rewards two things: guessing early, and guessing fast. The number of clues you had to read before the correct answer sets your base score, then the elapsed time reduces it.
Clues: the base score depends on how many clues you saw before finding the answer. 5000 points on the first clue, 4000 on the second, 3000 on the third, 2000 on the fourth, 1000 on the fifth.
Time: minus 1 point per second elapsed, with the penalty capped at 500 points. Answering fast therefore protects the bulk of your base score.
Miss: if you guess wrong once all five clues are already visible, the round scores zero. Your answer tolerates small typos, so there is no need to spell the category word for word.
In short, a round score equals your clue tier, from 5000 down to 1000, minus the time in seconds capped at 500, never dropping below zero. To maximize your points, you must dare to answer on as few clues as possible while doing it quickly: one clue too many costs a thousand points at once, far more than a few seconds of thought.
Tips to win your duels
Because the clues are identical for both players, winning comes down to the right balance between boldness and caution. The very first clue is deliberately obscure, but it is worth 5000 points: keep several hypotheses in mind and, if one clearly stands out, go for it without waiting. Every extra clue you let reveal costs you a thousand points of ceiling, the heaviest price in the game.
Keep an eye on the clock too: at one point per second, time weighs less than a clue, but it eventually eats into your lead on a tight round. Do not fuss over the spelling of your answer, the check tolerates small mistakes. Finally, do not aim for absolute certainty: on identical clues, whoever commits first with a solid hunch often takes the upper hand. After each duel, start a rematch to apply what you just learned.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play Pinpoint multiplayer with a friend?
Click Private Game to create a Pinpoint room, then share the invite link with your friend. When they open the link they join your room, and you race across 5 rounds on the same puzzles. No account is needed for private link play.
Do I need an account to play Pinpoint with friends?
No. The private link mode needs no account for either player: create the room, share the link, and start playing. An account is only required for random matchmaking against an unknown opponent.
How does the 5 round race work?
A Pinpoint duel runs over 5 rounds. Each round you and your opponent get the exact same puzzle, drawn from the puzzle bank in the host language, and you solve it separately. Your round scores are compared, then added up. After 5 rounds the highest total wins.
How is my Pinpoint multiplayer score calculated?
Each round rewards guessing from as few clues as possible: 5000 points on the first clue, 4000 on the second, 3000 on the third, 2000 on the fourth, 1000 on the fifth. Your time is then subtracted, one point per second up to a cap of 500, and the score never drops below zero. Guessing wrong once all five clues are shown scores zero for that round.
Can I play random opponents at Pinpoint online?
Yes. Pick Random Matchmaking to face a player from anywhere. This mode requires a free account so results can be tracked. If you are not signed in, you are sent to the sign-up page first.
