Why play Crossclimb with two players

Crossclimb blends vocabulary and logic: five clues give five five-letter words, which you stack into a ladder where each rung differs from its neighbour by a single letter, before guessing the two ends. Solo, you calmly untangle this puzzle. With two players, that same work becomes a race, because your opponent solves the exact same ladder at the same moment. Pressure changes everything: you find the right word faster, you dare to reorder without hesitating, and every second saved matters.

Playing Crossclimb with friends is also a short, social ritual. A ladder solves in a few minutes, so a full duel stays quick and slots into a break. You can fire up a rematch right away, compare your times, and turn a calm word puzzle into a friendly little contest, on a ladder that is strictly identical for both.

Finally, versus play sharpens your agility with words. Against the clock, you learn to spot at a glance which words sit one letter apart, to test a ladder order without freezing, and to guess an end from its single neighbour. These are exactly the reflexes that make you better at Crossclimb, and multiplayer is the best way to train them.

Playable anywhere, in real time

Crossclimb multiplayer runs entirely in the browser, in real time. As soon as your friend joins the lobby, you are linked to the same game: the round starts for both at once, each on your own device. Nothing to download, nothing to install, no extension: a web page is enough, on desktop, tablet or phone. You can start a duel from your couch and take on a friend across the country on the same ladder.

This lightness changes the way you play with friends. A full duel over five rounds wraps up in a few minutes, so you can slip a game into a lunch break, a queue or an evening. Ladders are drawn from a hand built bank, so every game differs from the last, and a rematch instantly kicks off a fresh set of brand new rounds.

The shared mode keeps both players in sync from start to finish. You watch your own clock run while you build the ladder, then both players' scores appear at the end of each round to show the gap. No third party app or separate software needed: everything is built into the page, from the invite room to the final screen that names the winner of the duel.

Challenge a friend in 3 steps

The simplest way to play Crossclimb with two players is the private room by link. It needs no account, for you or your friend. You create a game, share a link, and play. Here is exactly how it goes.

1

Create a private room

Click Private Game above. A Crossclimb room is created instantly, with no account and nothing to install. You land straight in the lobby as the host.

2

Share the invite link

Copy the room link and send it to your friend by message, chat or email. Anyone who opens it joins your room directly, no sign-up required on either side.

3

Start the 5 round race

Once your friend is in the lobby, launch the game. Each round you both get the exact same word ladder and race to solve it: find the five words, order the ladder, then guess the two ends.

Face a random opponent

No one on hand for a duel? Random matchmaking connects you with another player looking for a game at the same moment. Unlike the private room, this mode needs a free account: it is what lets us pair you with an opponent and track the result of the match. If you are not signed in when you pick this mode, you are first sent to the sign-up page, then the search begins.

Once an opponent is found, you automatically join the lobby and the game starts like a private duel: same rules, same 5 round race, same ladders for both. The only difference is that you do not know the person across from you. It is ideal for playing Crossclimb online when your friends are away, and for testing yourself against players from elsewhere.

The 5 round race

A Crossclimb duel is not played on a single ladder, but over a 5 round race. Each round, the same ladder is dealt to both players: you face precisely the same puzzle as your opponent, with no luck of the draw. Each of you plays on your own side, at your own pace, without watching the other ladder live.

Each round follows the full Crossclimb flow: you first solve the five clues to find the middle words, then you reorder the ladder so each pair of neighbours differs by a single letter, then a final clue asks you to guess the top and bottom words. At the end of each round, both scores are compared and added to your total. After the fifth round, the player with the highest total wins the duel. Since everything plays out over five ladders, a botched round is never fatal, you can always close the gap on the ones that follow.

How the score is calculated

Each round score rewards speed and accuracy. You start at 5000 points, and two penalties eat into that total as the round goes on.

Time: minus 20 points per second elapsed. It is the penalty that runs continuously, so solving the ladder fast makes all the difference.

Mistakes: minus 100 points per mistake. A mistake is either a wrong entry or a revealed hint letter. Reordering the ladder itself never costs anything.

Fairness: in multiplayer, letter hints cost points for everyone, including Premium members. Both players therefore play on strictly equal terms.

In short, a round score equals 5000 minus 20 times the time in seconds, minus 100 times the number of mistakes, never dropping below zero. To maximize your points, solve the ladder quickly, type the right word on the first try, and only open a letter hint as a last resort: each revealed letter costs as much as a wrong entry.

Tips to win your duels

Because the ladder is identical for both players, winning comes down to method, not luck. Start with the clues you are sure of: each word you find fixes a shared letter with its neighbours and narrows the others down. As soon as two words differ by a single letter, place them side by side: the ladder often builds in small chunks that end up locking together.

Avoid random entries: a wrong answer costs 100 points, as much as a hint letter, so it is better to think a second longer than to try three words in a row. For the two ends, lean on the neighbouring rung you already know: the top and bottom words are only one letter from their neighbour, which sharply narrows the field. Finally, keep a steady rhythm across all five rounds, consistency often beats a burst of speed followed by a messy round. After each duel, start a rematch to apply what you just learned.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play Crossclimb multiplayer with a friend?

Click Private Game to create a Crossclimb room, then share the invite link with your friend. When they open the link they join your room, and you race across 5 rounds on the same ladders. No account is needed for private link play.

Do I need an account to play Crossclimb with friends?

No. The private link mode needs no account for either player: create the room, share the link, and start playing. An account is only required for random matchmaking against an unknown opponent.

How does the 5 round race work?

A Crossclimb duel runs over 5 rounds. Each round you and your opponent get the exact same word ladder and solve it separately: find the five middle words, order the ladder so each rung differs by one letter, then guess the top and bottom words. Your round scores are compared, then added up. After 5 rounds the highest total wins.

How is my Crossclimb multiplayer score calculated?

Each round starts at 5000 points. You lose 20 points per second, and 100 points per mistake, where a mistake is either a wrong entry or a revealed hint letter. The score never drops below zero. In multiplayer, letter hints cost points for everyone, including Premium members, so both players play on strictly equal terms.

Can I play random opponents at Crossclimb online?

Yes. Pick Random Matchmaking to face a player from anywhere. This mode requires a free account so results can be tracked. If you are not signed in, you are sent to the sign-up page first.
