How to play Tango: rules, method and tips to win

The rules of Tango in brief
Tango is a logic puzzle played on a square grid, from 6x6 to 10x10, filled with two symbols: a sun and a moon. Your goal fits in one sentence. Every row and every column must contain exactly half suns and half moons. On a 6x6 grid, that means three suns and three moons per row and per column. On an 8x8, four of each. On a 10x10, five of each.
A second constraint shapes the filling. Never three identical symbols can follow each other, horizontally or vertically. Two suns or two moons can touch, never three. Some neighboring cells also carry a small sign, = or ×, that forces a relation between them. The = sign forces the same symbol on both sides. The × sign forces the opposite symbol. Every grid starts from a handful of pre-filled, locked cells, and has a single solution, reachable only by deduction. So there is no luck and no gambling. Our version is free and unlimited.
The step-by-step method to solve a grid
Observe before you place
Before placing anything, read the whole grid first. Spot the pre-filled cells: they are what kicks off the game. Look first for two identical symbols already sitting next to each other, because they immediately force the following cell, as well as for = and × clues linked to an already known cell, which often give the very first free move before you count anything at all.
Place a symbol, then propagate its consequences
As soon as you place a symbol, draw every immediate consequence from it. Check whether its row or column just reached its quota, which forces the rest into the other symbol. Check whether it forms a pair with a neighbor, which forces the next cell in line. Finally check whether it touches an = or × clue, which immediately propagates a deduction to the linked cell. This triple reflex, counting, pairing, clue-checking, is the engine of the whole game.
Chain the deductions
A game of Tango is not a series of independent moves, it is a chain reaction. Every placed cell shrinks other rows or columns down to a single possible combination, which get placed in turn and trigger new eliminations. You advance step by step until the grid fills in on its own. Three techniques are enough to run that chain from start to finish.
Technique 1: pair, center pattern and counting
These are the base techniques, the ones that alone solve most easy and intermediate grids. They rest on a single idea: a row or a column must end up with exactly half of each symbol, and never can three identical ones follow each other. Three concrete situations follow from this.
The pair, written "a a _": two neighboring cells already carry the same symbol. The next cell in line cannot carry that symbol, on pain of a triple, so it takes the opposite. The center pattern, written "a _ a": two known, identical cells surround an empty cell with a single gap. The center cannot repeat that symbol without forming a triple, so it also takes the opposite. Counting saturation, finally: as soon as a row or column reaches its quota for one symbol, every remaining cell in it automatically takes the other symbol, even if it touches no pair at all.
Get into the habit of recounting a row or column right after placing a symbol in it. That is often where the next forced cell hides, rather than in a visible pair, especially on larger sizes where the eye tracks neighbors less easily.
Technique 2: clue propagation
When counting and pairs are no longer enough, the = and × clues take over. An = sign between two neighboring cells forces the same symbol on both sides. A × sign forces the opposite symbol. As soon as one of the two cells is known, the other is deduced immediately, without even looking at the rest of the row or column.
These clues are especially valuable at the very start of a grid, when no pair is visible yet and counting still says nothing. It is sometimes the only way to begin solving. Once a cell is deduced this way, it rejoins the normal interplay of pairs, center patterns and counting, and the deduction chain continues as usual.
Watch out for a common confusion: an = sign does not mean both cells necessarily carry a sun, nor does a × mean they necessarily carry already-known symbols. The sign only describes a relation between the two cells, to apply as soon as either one is revealed, whenever that happens during solving.
Technique 3: the one-move test
On the hardest grids, it happens that neither counting, nor pairs, nor clues make progress. Bring out the one-move test then, also called reasoning by contradiction. Pick an empty cell and imagine placing a symbol there. Immediately apply its direct consequences: the three-in-a-row rule and the count of the affected row and column. Then ask a simple question: does this move immediately break one of these rules?
If the answer is yes, it is a contradiction. That symbol therefore cannot go in that cell, and you eliminate that possibility for good. Notice that you placed no real symbol: you only tested a hypothesis and observed that it led to a dead end. The opposite then becomes forced, and the test restarts counting and pairs elsewhere on the grid.
A word of honesty: there is no secret technique in Tango beyond these three. Guides that promise exotic methods are really describing variants of the one-move test, applied more or less far. Master the pair, the center pattern, counting, clue propagation and the one-move test, and you hold the whole game.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting the vertical rule
The number one mistake is watching for three in a row only horizontally. It applies just as much down a column, and many hidden triples form there without being noticed. After every placed symbol, systematically check both directions, with no exception.
Ignoring the = and × clues
Some players solve only by counting and forget the small signs between cells. Yet these clues are a full deduction source of their own, sometimes the only one available at the very start of a grid. Ignoring them means giving up a free move.
Guessing instead of deducing
Placing a symbol on a hunch breaks the logic and leads you straight to a contradiction a few moves later, often without you understanding where the error came from. If nothing is forced, do not gamble: recount the affected row and column first, look for a clue, then move on to the one-move test. The solution is always reachable without guessing.

Start small. Stay on the 6x6 until the pair and the center pattern become pure reflex, then gradually climb toward the 8x8 and the 10x10. Add systematic = and × clue reading as you tackle tougher grids, and keep the one-move test for the most expert ones. Speed, for its part, never comes from rushing. Fast players do not guess, they instantly recognize which technique applies and where.
